The father/daughter team of Cat Girton and John Girton will debut new and vintage material together and separately in the Off Center Stage at The Center for the Arts.

Cat has been writing and performing music for most of her life. At age 7, she first sang onstage as a part of the Girtons Three, with her father John and her mother Linda Girton.

At 13, she recorded and produced her first original album, Soundtrack of Your Life, which included vocals, guitar, and synthesizer.

She continued to perform music throughout her time in high school, writing several more original songs including “2-Faced”, “Just a Dream” and “Break Me Like Glass”. She performed at multiple school events, open mics, and parties.

After taking a hiatus from music in order to study chemistry at UC Santa Cruz, Cat went on to self produce a second studio album, Local Vocals and Bizarre Guitar. This album features several different genres, with heavy pop-rock and 80’s influences.

She has performed her original music at bars, restaurants, wineries, weddings, street fairs, and at the Burning Man festival in 2016. Cat is diligently working on her third studio album, and has performed with folk duo Faces & Aces and the Crackerjack Jazz Band.

John Girton is well known throughout the world for his work as lead guitarist with the group Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks. John recorded 3 albums with the group, and also wrote and arranged material for them.

He was also featured as guitarist, saxophonist, clarinetist, and occasional mandolinist with the popular vocalist, Maria Muldaur for many years.

After numerous international tours, John started his own group in the San Francisco area. This group, the Girtones played a blend of jazz, swing and blues in Oregon and California, sometimes including singer Maria Muldaur as a member.

John has made several solo tours of England, where he performed in concerts and clubs throughout the country. These days he performs locally and is quite active in the Nevada County Music scene.

He currently performs solo jazz guitar at various venues in the Foothills area of California and has recently released a new CD called You Are There, which was produced at John’s Nugget Studios in Grass Valley, CA.

John has been playing music professionally for over 20 years as an instrumentalist, vocalist, recording artist, studio musician, and composer. His original songs are a mixture of jazz, swing, blues and folk music, with a bit of humor thrown in for good measure. You can hear some of these tunes on his latest CD, Greatest Hits.

Ryan McKasson and Eric McDonald are masters of tradition who purposefully explore the dark corners floating on its edges. Their individual artistry is enhanced when together. In short, the sum creates a greater whole.

The result is an alluring complexity, full of spontaneous musicality. Pulling from parallel strands of influence, they create a swirling level of intensity that traverses darkness, light, and everywhere in between. An air of mystery pervades a sound compelling enough to transcend boundaries and appeal to music lovers of all stripes. Devon Leger of Hearth Music says, “This duo really shows how two masterful musicians listen and play off each other.” The music this duo creates is to share, and live performance is the forte. Their mutual attitude stretches beyond the music. The two have been good friends ever since they met, and this is present in their live performances, which are full of organic banter and good humor to go along with the music. They create an environment of their own design, drawing in listeners without pretense. Despite both living active musical lives thousands of miles apart these two musicians have committed to working together to forge a new musical path.

Ryan McKasson has gained a strong reputation as a performer, composer, collaborator and teacher. In 1994, he began attending Alasdair Fraser’s Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School (VOM), which led him deep into the world of traditional music. In 1996 he became the youngest ever to win the US National Scottish Fiddle Championship and in 1997 he was awarded a Merit Scholarship for Viola Performance from the University of Southern California, where he studied with Donald McInnes. Ryan’s professional career took a step forward when in 2004 he spearheaded the formation and development of “The McKassons”. This group released two critically acclaimed albums, Tall Tales (2004) and Tripping Maggie (2006). Over the years Ryan has recorded with a number of influential artists, namely his playing appears on fellow Scottish fiddle champion Hanneke Cassel’s three albums Silver (2006), For Reasons Unseen (2009), andDot the Dragon’s Eyes (2013), as well as Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas’s recording Highlander’s Farewell (2011). In addition to McKasson & McDonald, other current projects include MAC, Ensemble Galilei and The Syncopaths.

Eric McDonald found his way to traditional music through the rich local music scene in his hometown Boston. Nearly a decade after studying at Berklee College of Music under world renowned musicians such as guitarist/mandolinist John McGann and cellist Eugene Friesene, he is now established as one of the USA’s premier accompanists in many styles. Eric cut his teeth playing for contra dances in New England, and can still often be seen from the dance floor. Nowadays he is an active session player, regularly recording and traveling with musicians of many stripes. Touring credits include The Outside Track, Andrea Beaton, Wendy MacIsaac and Katie McNally. In addition to McKasson & McDonald, he can currently be seen touring with the lively trio Daymark, Scottish powerhouse Cantrip, and award winning singer/songwriter Connor Garvey. In addition to guitar accompaniment, Eric’s debut solo album Rove features his unique style and approach to tunes on the mandolin, as well as carefully crafted deliveries of traditional ballads on voice and guitar.

Keeping a continuous road schedule of clubs across the nation, Auggie introduced himself to a new legion of fans in January of 2004, with a now legendary appearance on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show. This led to performing in theaters across the country on the very popular Bob & Tom Comedy Tour, where audiences quickly became aware that the only thing better than listening to Auggie on the radio was sharing the energy he creates in his live performance.

“Begin learning about The Mammals and Mike + Ruthy: the present and future of the American folk music tradition is vital and vested in them.” – Unreal Bluegrass

A high-octane Americana quintet from New York’s storied Hudson Valley, The Mammals carry on the work of Pete Seeger & Woody Guthrie with a deep original repertoire and signature “trad is rad” sound.

Founded in 2001 by Seeger’s grandson, Tao, second-generation fiddler/singer, Ruth Ungar, and banjo/guitar songsmith, Mike Merenda, The Mammals reemerged in 2017 “stronger than ever” (Folk Alley) fronted by Mike + Ruthy along with drums, bass, and pedal steel. Known for their jubilant, high-energy shows, The Mammals deftly move from older-than-dirt banjo duets to sound-the-alarm topical fare that’s right in line with the times, bouncing from roof-raising hoe-downs to hear-a-pin-drop a cappella balladry.

“The Mammals don’t suffer from multiple genre syndrome, they celebrate it as if gleefully aware that the sound barriers separating old-timey music, vintage pop, and contemporary folk are as permeable as cotton.” – Washington Post

“Their dynamic shows regularly bring a tear to the eye and hope to the hearts of listeners of all generations. In an era of disconnect, The Mammals work to re-connect thru their truth-telling lyrics, off-the-cuff storytelling, and euphoric instrumentals.” – No Depression

“Some of the best songwriting of their generation.” – LA Weekly

“A string band at the core, The Mammals augment their sound with drums and electric guitar to create a collectively harmonized howl as thrilling and rocking as any band currently subverting folk traditions.” – No Depression

Pug Skullz with Red Pills, The Has Beens, Captain CutiePie, Jesus and the Dinosaurs

Saturday, March 10th, 7:00 PM, Off Center Stage

  • Tickets $5 at the door
  • No advance ticket sales

Pug Skullz is a three-piece punk band from the backwoods of Nevada County, California. Members include Trevor on percussion, Jarade on bass/vocals and Doug on guitar/vocals.

In the spirit of punk ancestors like 7 Seconds and Stiff Little Fingers, Pug Skullz music is catchy, loud, fast and simple, and their lyrics carry a contemplative message of surprising depth. Songs cover topics ranging from political prisoners, government spying, corporate dominance in culture, deep ecology, metaphysical spirituality, sabotage, introspection and other fun human games. ‘The Vinyl Avenger’ calls Pug Skullz music, “…late 70’s, early 80’s, honest, raw, fast and loud, in-your-face punk rock. Just the way we like it here!”

Pug Skullz have played all over northern California, yet are especially proud of their shows with Bad Daddies at Stockton’s Plea for Peace Center, Aberzombies and The Left Hand at Matthew Marrujo’s Colony in Sacramento and numerous dates with Slutzville. Pug Skullz closing of the Far West Punk Fest at The Where House? in February marked the apex of freedom of expression in south Sacramento’s warehouse district. Their radio performance for KVMR radio’s ‘Vinyl Avenger’ was well received by some very strange people around the planet.

Jarade also has deep roots in northern California punk, having played with Free Radical and Thanx For Nuthin’, making it all the way to the legendary venue, 924 Gilman. He and Doug met while hanging around with a bunch of local anarchists in mid-2011.

Doug is from Montana and has been obsessed with punk since the 20/20 with Hugh Downs news show announced the Sex Pistols North American tour in 1978. His former band, El Dorko, released ‘Squatter’s Inc.,’ a well-received, hopelessly out-of-print, 17-song political hardcore LP in 1996. He occasionally writes about real, raw rock for the blog 50thirdand3rd, and his own blog, Punk Retrospective and enjoys playing and working with computers, wood and paint. “No image, just expression.”

Known for its energy and its stage presence, Genticorum has given more than 800 concerts in more than 15 countries.

Firmly rooted in the soil of their native land, the energetic and original traditional ‘power trio’ also incorporates the dynamism of today’s North American and European folk cultures in their music. They weave precise and intricate fiddle, flute and accordion work, gorgeous vocal harmonies, energetic foot percussion and guitar accompaniment into a big and jubilant musical feast. Their distinctive sound, sense of humour and stage presence makes them a supreme crowd pleaser.

PASCAL GEMME
Pascal Gemme is a leading light in Quebec’s traditional music scene.Known as much for his original compositions as his fine interpretation of traditional tunes, Pascal is the fiddler, singer and arranger of the band, Genticorum, whose CDs have met with critical acclaim in several countries.

From a young age, the fiddle music and songs of his native province have captivated him. After graduating with a degree in composition and band arrangements at Montreal’s St Laurent College, he immersed himself in the traditional music around him, playing, collecting and recording music found all over Quebec. Pascal has developed a vast knowledge and is a leading exponent of the music.

YANN FALQUET
Yann Falquet is a very active and creative acoustic guitar player on the Québécois music scene. He has explored many styles of music and completed a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz. Since then, he has developed a personal guitar style for Québec folk music, inspired by the playing of the accompanists of different cultures (Brittany, Scandinavia, Ireland, North America).

His involvement in the province’s traditional music scene has brought Yann to perform on numerous recordings, and to tour regularly throughout Canada, the U.S., Europe and Australia with Genticorum but also with JUNO award-winning Celtic and world group The McDades, the Jean-François Bélanger Trio and with cellist Natalie Haas.

NICHOLAS WILLIAMS
Nicholas Williams has developed a reputation as a versatile and sought-after musician in the traditional music scenes of Québec and New England. His rhythmic yet nuanced style of flute playing draws from Irish and Scottish traditions, as well as from his studies of classical North Indian music. After completing a BFA in world music and composition at York University, Nicholas moved to Québec in 2000, where he has enjoyed exploring the common ground of his own diverse musical experiences with the rich Québécois musical tradition. Also an accomplished accordion and piano player, he has been a member of the band Crowfoot since 2005, plays with fiddler Laura Risk, and in the Alex Kehler & Nicholas Williams duo.
