Special activities from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Free admission for children under 6

Pack your picnic basket. Grab a blanket and chairs – and seize the chance to picnic on our glorious grounds. The annual Miners Picnic is a summer celebration of our colorful, gold mining history – and everyone’s invited!

The first Miners Picnic was held 1895 to raise money for miners’ widows and orphans, as well as injured and out-of-work miners. Today, it’s an action-packed day of fun, food, gold history, and lasting memories.

A nail-biting mine rescue reenactment at high noon is a must. Will help arrive in time to save the injured miners? Witness the event in the Mineyard, and cheer the rescue team on.

You’re also welcome to visit the old Blacksmith Shop. Our popular “smithies” always have old-west tales to tell. There is Living History at Empire Cottage – with docents portraying many of the characters who shaped our history, such as the Bourn Family, the Starrs – and chatty housekeeper, Katie Moriarty. They’ll be glad to tell you what life was like in the early 1900s.

You’ll also enjoy:

  • The choice of bringing your own lunch or purchasing food, drinks
and ice cream from local vendors (including the traditional miners’
    favorite, Cornish pasties)
  • Vintage cars
  • Lavish, period costumes
  • Challenging games and entertainment for children
  • Learning how to pan for gold
  • An old-fashioned cake walk
  • Equipment exhibits
  • Live music by popular, local bands,
as well as strolling musicians & entertainers
  • Surprises too! (You never know who may be visiting.)

Plan on spending the day – because you don’t want to miss a thing!

Everyone’s invited!

The prices are: $7 for 17 & over, $3 children 6-16, FREE for children under 6.

What do you have planned for the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving?

The season of good cheer starts here!

Celebrate the holidays early 1900s’ style at Holidays at Empire Mine.  With old-fashioned decorations, lavish period costumes, and festive live music, Empire Cottage will be brimming with good cheer, including complimentary cookies.

Docents portraying the prestigious Bourn Family, the Starrs, and chatty housekeeper Katie Moriarty will be there to greet you and share insights about Empire’s glory days when it ranked as one of the most prosperous hard-rock gold mines in North American history.

A short walk away, in the old Clubhouse, Santa and Mrs. Claus (with the help of local elves) will be listening carefully to Christmas wishes. Outside local vendors will be selling coffee, hot dogs, and other snacks.

The Mineyard will be buzzing with activity. Take a peek in the Mine Shaft, the Machine, Wood, and Blacksmith Shops – and imagine what life was like during those days of hard work, grit and glory!

A visit to the Gift Shop is a must – especially at this time of year. Besides a fascinating selection of unusual geological gifts, jewelry, and mementos, heritage roses will be for sale.  Propagated by our dedicated Volunteers on the premises, these roses will add a touch of history to any garden – and make thoughtful imaginative gifts.

Enjoy a magical day and a golden memory your entire family will treasure!
