Summer Thyme’s Bakery & Deli is once again open for business at its new 4,700-square-foot facility. The larger location employs 27 people, half of whom are working full time.
The cafe seats more than 100 customers at a time, and the owners plan to use some of that space to set up a jazz lounge.
In the week since its soft opening, Summer Thyme’s has already seen a strong turnout, said co-owner Amy Cooke. They might not be getting much in the way of foot traffic from the downtown area yet, but the new location has excellent visibility, and so far, most of their customers live in the neighborhood.
“We’ve been very lucky,” she said. “We have a very loyal following and incredible customers that really feel like family. There’s a community here that is just incredible.”
Cooke co-owns the restaurant with her husband, Chamba.
“We’re not on the tourist radar yet,” Cooke said, “but we’ve been a locals’ hangout for a long time.”
They plan to host music on Friday and Saturday nights. They’re also in the process of acquiring a beer and wine license, and their new kitchen has allowed the restaurant to serve dinner options for the first time.
Summer Thyme’s is a proponent of the farm to table movement, Cooke said, describing the menu as locally sourced California cuisine with Asian and Mexican influences. It includes vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and paleo options.
“We work really hard to accommodate different diets,” she said. “We want to nourish bodies, minds and taste buds.” They also offer free wi-fi, espresso beverages and breads that are baked in-house.
The restaurant has developed a program supporting local nonprofits by giving customers one wooden token for each $5 spent. The token can then be deposited into a drop box for one of three local organizations, and Summer Thyme’s will make a small donation to that organization on the customer’s behalf.
This also provides the local nonprofit community with an opportunity to publicize various causes, Cooke said.
Summer Thyme’s is planning a grand opening event for Valentine’s Day weekend.
The Chamber of Commerce will be holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon on Feb. 14.
Saturday will feature live music from local jazz harpist Motoshi Kosako. Then on Sunday, resident artist Tana Vivian will be speaking about her work and its connection to social causes. Vivian will be visiting from Ojai, but she grew up here in the Grass Valley area.
