We greatly appreciate the unwavering support and commitment from our Friends of the Chamber.
The City of Grass Valley
It is said that Grass Valley was named by settlers whose cattle had wandered from their campsite on Greenhorn Creek to a "grassy valley" nearby where the grazing was better. Miners panning for gold along Wolf Creek and a major discovery of gold-bearing quartz in 1850 started a boom. The "grassy valley" was an easy place to put up buildings.
The City of Grass Valley has been an advocate of the Grass Valley Chamber for nearly 100 years. We've got history.
It was 1979 when Mike and June Rough packed up their station wagon with little money, four kids, two dogs and most importantly their faith, left Ohio and headed west to California for a new life.
Two sons-in-law (Bob Medlyn & Brian O’Brien) now head up the day to day operations but they are both quick to appreciate that it is Mike and June’s ethics, hearts and desire to grow in a managed fashion that formed the foundation which now resides in everyone who makes up The Beam Easy Living Center.

Jennco Web Works is a family run business located in the beautiful Sierra foothills of Northern California.
Jennco was started in 1990 as a small web development firm to handle the numerous requests for realtor websites. Business spread through word of mouth and Jennco has designed websites for a wide range of companies all across America.
Jennco Web Works was not born out of the .com boom in Silicon Valley. Jennco is and has always been a small, local business looking to fill a need and do that job well.
Jennco is never about the WalMart experience. We are much happier doing a fabulous job on 50 sites than a mediocre job on 500 (and we’re sure you’re happier too). We believe in personal attention and know that the most satisfied clients are the ones who feel like their input matters. It is your site, after all.
If you have questions, call us at 530-852-7863. A real, live person will answer.

In 1874, Bank of the West opened its doors on the California frontier as Farmers National Gold Bank. One of just 10 banks nationwide authorized to issue paper currency backed by gold reserves, the San Jose bank helped people build homes, finance farms, and grow their businesses.
Over the years, we grew bigger and reached beyond our hometown roots. Customers entrusted us with their money, we continued to provide great service, protect deposits and lend prudently to the growing communities we served. In 1880, Farmers National Gold Bank became First National Bank of San Jose.
Careful management and sound banking practices allowed the bank to contribute to the Bay Area's growth through the 1906 earthquake, the Great Depression, and two World Wars. Following World War II, the bank grew rapidly and by 1979 had 35 San Francisco Bay Area locations and $350 million in assets.
In 1979, we changed our name to Bank of the West. The change reflected our desire to grow and provide our style of relationship banking beyond the Bay Area. Today, we have branch and commercial banking offices across the West Coast, the Southwest, the Midwest, and the Rocky Mountain states.
Since 1980, we have been affiliated with BNP Paribas, a global leader in financial services and one of the world's six highest rated banks. In 2001, our holding company BancWest Corporation became a wholly-owned subsidiary of BNP Paribas.
Bank of the West has continued to grow in recent years, thanks to a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions, including United California Bank, the largest Los Angeles-based bank, in 2002, Union Safe Deposit Bank in California's Central Valley and Community First Bank in Fargo, ND, both in 2004, and Commercial Federal Bank, of Omaha, in 2005.
Today, Bank of the West has customers in all 50 states and operates more than 700 branch banking and commercial office locations in 19 Western and Midwestern states. Prudent credit underwriting, a diversified loan portfolio, and careful risk management have allowed us to grow to more than $62 billion in assets. It is one of the nation's largest banks, yet it preserves its local feel and its award-winning style of relationship banking that ensures superior customer service.
The Union began publication as the Grass Valley Daily Morning Union on October 28, 1864.
Townsend and Blumenthal founded the paper to support the Union cause in the Civil War. Every issue in later years has carried the motto "Founded in 1864 to Preserve The Union - One and Inseparable."
In 1893 the Union became the Associated Press wire service's first affiliate in the West. The Union incorporated in 1906. From 1864 to March 1945, it was a morning paper. It ran as an afternoon paper until July 1999 when it resumed morning delivery. Over the Union's history, twelve men and one woman have served as publisher.
In 1906, The Union moved down the street from its original location to the "The Union" building at 151 Mill Street, Grass Valley. Both historic buildings still stand in downtown Grass Valley. In 1978, the paper moved from downtown to its current location at 464 Sutton Way, Grass Valley.

The Grande Story
What happens when you take a custom cabinetry and furniture manufacturing facility and combine it with a home décor and gift store? The GRANDE WOOD DESIGNS CENTER on Plaza Drive in Grass Valley is created!
It all began in 1990 when Joe Grande started Grande Wood Designs (the manufacturing side) to provide custom designed furniture and cabinetry to compliment and serve individual personalities, needs and lifestyle.
With His Italian heritage, tradition of high standards and attention to detail, each piece incorporates integrity, product knowledge and designing skills which guarantees a proven ability to effectively enhance the quality of your living environment. Creating furniture and cabinetry “for the way you live” whether remodeling a kitchen or bathroom, or designing a bedroom set or hutch, GWD is committed to quality from the conception of design to final installation of your project.
A new chapter to Grande Wood Designs was in 2009 when Joe’s engineering background, along with his wife, Edwina’s design background, took a leap of faith and ventured into the retail business to complement their manufacturing line. Nevada County no longer had a specialty gift and décor store, so GWD decided to focus on unique and exclusive home décor items that enrich lives, bring people closer together and celebrates life. The store’s specialty collections include beautiful table top pieces, glassware & linens, candles, lamps, exclusive accent pieces, wall clocks and art along with men’s and ladies’ fragrance lines and brand names like Lenox, Dansk, Vietri, Certified International and the Gerson Company.
As you enter the store, there is a chance you will be greeted by “KUBOTA” (a very social 120# Black Lab/Husky) and made to feel at home by staff associates. This friendly ambiance inspires you to select the perfect gift for that special person in your life!
Grande Wood Designs strives to present a pleasant and informative buying experience. All that we are and all that we do allows your dreams to become a reality.
Cirino's at Main Street
Our story began in 1983 when Jerry Cirino first opened the doors to Cirino’s Bar & Grill in Nevada City, Ca offering “time honored” recipes from the Cirino family kitchen.
This old-world tradition of using only the freshest seasonal ingredients, along with the Cirino standard of quality and flavor, left our friends and guests wanting more.
Generations of families have celebrated birthdays, engagements, anniversaries and proms in our historied walls. Thus, to meet the demand of our continually growing clientele, we expanded our operation to downtown Grass Valley and opened Cirino’s at Main Street in 2003.
Cirino’s at Main Street boasts a menu of 70 items as well as an offering of daily specials. On any given day you can enjoy foods from neighboring Mediterranean countries or experience our signature Italian dishes while celebrating what life is truly all about… sharing the table with family, friends, delicious food and drink.
We invite you to come on in and join us. You may even discover what “will change your life”… our signature Cirino Bloody Mary.
Salute! The Cirino Family
Sierra Theaters is a locally owned, family business that operates Sierra Cinemas, The Del Oro Theatre, Sutton Cinemas, and The Nevada Theatre Film Series. Each theatre is clean, staffed with friendly, helpful employees, and features comfortable seats and state-of-the-art projection and sound systems. The popcorn is delicious, too!
Mike Getz began his career in the movie business in the early 60’s. He created the first wildly successful midnight movie series in Hollywood in 1963 and helped launch the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” midnight movie phenomenon in theaters throughout the country. In order to view independent films locally, Mike and Barbara Getz started the Nevada Theatre Film Series in 1979. Mike’s talent to entertain the audience is evident in the 36-year success story of this popular Nevada City Sunday night tradition.
In 1989, The Getz’s opened Sierra Cinemas, a 4 screen, first run movie theatre in Grass Valley. In 2001, they opened Sutton Cinemas, a 2 screen theatre in the Brunswick Plaza. In December, 2003, The Getz’s purchased the Del Oro Theatre in downtown Grass Valley and began an extensive remodeling effort, which culminated in the Grand Re-Opening and Tower Lighting ceremony in October, 2004. Thousands of folks filled the streets to witness the lighting of the tower, which had been dark for over 20 years.
Now operated by Mike and Barbara's son-in-law Michael LaMarca and daughter Azriel and a team of experienced managers and staff, Sierra Theaters is a true family business committed to quality entertainment for our community. For over 25 years, Sierra Theaters has also been employing and training Nevada County’s youth, giving hundreds of young people their first job.
Sierra Cinemas, Del Oro Theatre, and Sutton Cinemas are fully equipped with digital projection and sound, including 3D, with digital assisted listening and closed-captioning devices. Showcasing first-run Hollywood movies, independent and art movies, and live events such as The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD and National Theatre Live, Sierra Theaters is proud to bring the best in the world to Nevada County audiences.

As a successful businesses owner you are no doubt approached regularly by community organizations in search of financial support, but we ask that you please take a few minutes to consider this announcement about formation of Friends of the Chamber –– a special fundraising drive aimed at ensuring that the fiscal strength of the Greater Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce is bolstered and secured beyond our yearly operating budget.
Because of your longtime, continuing success while other businesses have been forced to close their doors, we are asking you to consider helping advance the mission of the GGVCC, the largest business advocacy organization in Western Nevada County. With your support, we can reach our reserve fund goal by the end of 2014 to assure the continued success of future programs and the Chamber agenda.
In 2013 we saw a steady increase in chamber membership, establishment of the most comprehensive visitor information center in this region, reorganization of the chamber’s administrative staff, a revamped website, and an income stream that meets the needs of our basic operating budget.
But to keep the momentum rolling and put ourselves in a position where we can take bold steps toward increased marketing and promotion of this area as the ideal place to live and work, we are looking for twenty successful businesses to contribute $2,500 each to the special Friends of the Chamber reserve fund.
The previous page highlights some of the benefits of being a Friend –– to include advertising on the chamber’s website, VIP accommodations at all chamber functions, prominent visibility for your business at the new visitor information center, and much more. We believe the premiums provided in exchange for a $2,500 contribution will prove to be one of the best investments you can make.
We will be happy to answer any questions you might have about the reserve fund’s purpose and the benefits you will receive as a contributor.
Without question, as a Friend of the Chamber you will have a direct, positive impact upon the future of this community. Thank you for considering this new approach to help fund important chamber goals.
Keith Davies, Chief Executive Officer
Greater Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce
